About Lake O’ the Pines Wildlife Management Area

Located in Marion County in northeastern Texas, the Lake O’ the Pines Wildlife Management Area (WMA) spans a diverse landscape of forests, wetlands, and open water surrounding Lake O’ the Pines reservoir. Established to provide managed habitats for game species, this WMA is a favorite for hunters, anglers, and nature enthusiasts alike. The area supports populations of white-tailed deer, wild turkey, waterfowl, and various small game, thriving in the managed woodlands and brushland. Its sprawling reservoir, formed by the impoundment of Big Cypress Bayou, creates excellent habitat for largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and other freshwater fish, attracting anglers year-round. The mix of hardwoods, conifers, and wetlands contributes to diverse wildlife viewing opportunities for bird watchers and photographers. Public recreation includes regulated hunting seasons, fishing from shore or boat, limited camping, and small-scale hiking. While no elaborate trail systems exist, the open terrain offers informal routes and access points for outdoor exploration. The site holds historical significance as part of the regional water management and timber industry, and it continues to play a key role in habitat conservation and sustainable recreation. Visitors appreciate the peaceful setting amid East Texas pine forests and the chance to connect with wildlife in a less crowded natural environment. The WMA's cooperative management by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department ensures balanced protection and use of resources.
